  Tosylation of non-protected glycopyranosides with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of 4-dimethyl-aminopyridine, after activiation of the glycosides by dibutyltin oxide, gave mono-O-tosylates in good yield. The regioselectivity in this tosylation was different from that in the corresponding benzoylation for some glycosides. The reason for this difference is discussed based on an equilibrium of the tin intermediates and kinetic attack of the tosyl chloride on the intermediates. Thus, by application of this tosylation method to non-protected and partially protected glycosides, various glycoside mono-O-tosylates were synthesized regioselectively.

  Subsequent hydrolysis resulted in the production of [18F]6FDG. Under optimal conditions, [18F]6FDG is produced 60–70 min after end of bombardment (EOB) in 71 ± 12% yield (decay corrected, based upon fluoride) with a radiochemical purity of ⩾96%. Preliminary experiments have indicated that [18F]6FDG may be a more representative in vivo tracer for the glucose transporter than 2FDG. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley

• Synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial activities of novel monosaccharide-containing Schiff base ligands

  Four new chiral Schiff base ligands (3a-4a, 3b-4b) have been prepared using aminoisopropylidene derivatives of glucose and aminochloralose derivatives of mannose. The synthesized compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance ($^1}$H and $^13}$C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV/visible spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. A total of eight Schiff base compounds (3a-6a, 3b-6b) were tested for antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 12228, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Klebsiella pneumoniae CCM 2318, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Salmonella typhimurium CCM 5445, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, and Candida albicans ATCC 10239 and exhibited a range of activities.

  Abstract 6-Deoxy-6- C -sulfo- d -glucopyranose (sulfoquinovose) has been prepared and characterised as its brucinium and potassium salts. The bis-cyclohexylammonium salt of its aldonic acid, 6-deoxy-6- C -sulfo- d -gluconic acid, has also been obtained. Their oxidation by sodium periodate gives 2-sulfoacetaldehyde.
