Effecient synthesis and decomposition study of optically nonlinear adducts of tetracyanoquinodimethane

Described are the synthetic conditions resulting in a significant improvement in both yield and reaction time of Z-beta-(1-substituted-4-pyridinium)-alpha-cyano-4-styryldicyanomethanide chromophores. The Mg|(LB monolayer)|Ptstructures of Z-β-(1-hexadecyl-4-quinolinium)-α-cyano-4-styryldicyanomethanide (C16H33–Q3CNQ) show asymmetric current–voltage characteristics; the behaviour is attributed to the organic monolayer although whether it is due to the presence of the permanent dipole moment or molecular rectification is unclear.

Reactions between trivalent lanthanide ions and the radical anion of 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) produce four mononuclear complexes [Ln(TCNQ)(2)(H2O)(7)](TCNQ)center dot 5H(2)O center dot EtOH [Ln = Nd (1), Sm (2), Eu (3) and Gd (4)] and three dinuclear complexes [Ln(2)(TCNQ)(2)(H2O)(15)](TCNQ)(4)center dot x(p-dioxane)center dot 7H(2)O [Ln = Ce (5, x = 2.5), Pr (6, x = 2.5) and Nd (7, x = 2)]. One of the coordinated TCNQ. radical anions is involved in pi-pi stacking interactions with the uncoordinated TCNQ. radical anions, and the other coordinated TCNQ. radical anion is not involved in such pi-pi interactions in 1-4. All the TCNQ. radical anions are involved in pi-pi interactions in 5-7. The effect of reaction solvent on the structures of 1-7 was revealed.
