A series of 4,5-diamino-substituted-1,2-benzoquinones were prepared from catechol and the corresponding secondaryamines in high yield in a single step using copper complex formation to stabilize the intermediate. The cytotoxicity of the products under various conditions was evaluated using the EMT-6 mammary carcinoma cell line, and antitumor activity was tested in the L1210 murine leukemia. The 4
4,5-Dimethoxy-o-benzoquinone has been prepared by the oxidation of catechol with sodium iodate in methanol. In higher alcohols, the same oxidation occurs in the presence of a crown ether to give the corresponding 4,5-dialkoxy-o-benzoquinones. In the latter cases using 18-crown-6, the potassium salt is more effective than the sodium salt.

regioselectivity of the Fremy'ssaltoxidation of phenols, including a series of MNDO calculations of the intermediate phenoxy radicals, has been carried out. The analysis of these results has led us to establish a new rule for the para vs. ortho regioselectivity, namely: “C-4 unsubstituted phenols, as well as phenols substituted at C-4 with easy-to-displace groups, undergo oxidation (or oxidative degradation)
Reported here are some rearrangements involving the electrocyclic ringclosure of dieneynes 7. Such ringclosures are envisaged to possibly give strained substituted cyclic allenes 8 which could also behave as diradicals 8a. The results show that compounds such as 5 rearrange to cyclohexadienones 9a, 9b, or 11 through these kind of intermediates. Theoretical calculations performed on simple models

There is disclosed a method and composition for controlling rust disease in plants. Metabolites produced by
Aphanocladium album
mycoparasites are recovered and applied in an effective amount to plants at risk for acquiring rust disease More specifically, the application of the metabolite converts infective urediniospores that cause rust disease into non-infective teliospores. In a more specific aspect, the metabolite is reacted with another substance or under a specific reaction to result in a different compound which is also effective against rust disease.
