Hypervalent iodine (λ 5 ) reagents in combination with P-toluenesulfonic acid when reacted with ketones under reflux temperature in acetonitrile gave α-tosyloxy ketones in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction was developed further for both ketones and dicarbonyl compounds using Dess-Martin periodinane reagent in combination with P-toluenesulfonic acid and methanesulfonic acid, to give mono-α-tosyloxy

Abstract α-Tosyloxy ketones and α-mesyloxy ketones were directly prepared from alcohols in one pot by treatment with hypervalentiodine(V) reagents in combination with p-toluenesulfonic acid and methanesulfonic acid, respectively, in moderate to good yields. Reactions were also feasible under solvent-free conditions.

alpha-oxysulfonylation of ketones catalysed by enantioenriched iodoarenes using mCPBA as stoichiometric oxidant is reported to give useful synthetic intermediates in good yield and modest enantioselectivity. We believe this to be the first report of an enantioselective organocatalytic reaction involving hypervalent iodine reagents which should open up a new field for enantioselective organocatalysis of oxidation
An improved light activatable anaerobic curable composition of the type comprising:
a) an acrylate or methacrylate monomer or prepolymer;
b) a peroxide compound;
c) a ferrocenyl compound; and
d) an α- or β-sulfonyloxyacetophenone compound of the formula I, II or III.
in which R, - R10, X, Y and n are as defined in Claim 1. The α-or β-sulfonyloxyphenone compound used in the compositions of the invention are distinguished by their rapid activation over existing onium salts.
