The addition of chloral and bromal to a variety of alkyl-substituted alkenes has been investigated. The effect on the reaction of varying the Lewisacid catalyst and the structure of the substrate have been studied. Anhydrous AlCl3 was found to be the most effective catalyst, and ene-type adducts were the major products in most cases. Side reactions were observed with the less reactive systems leading

When 1-halogeno-3-alkene-2-ol is reacted with an ortho-carboxylic ester and/or a ketene acetal, a .gamma.-halogeno-.delta.-unsaturated-carboxylic ester is obtained as a main reaction product. When this intermediate is treated with a basic substance, a substituted cyclopropane-carboxylic ester is formed. This ester can be used as an insecticide or an agricultural chemical as it is or after the alcohol residue of the ester has been converted to other alcohol residue.

A catalyst includes a cyclic imide compound having an N-substituted cyclic imide skeleton represented by following Formula (I):
1
wherein X is an oxygen atom or a hydroxyl group, and having a solubility parameter of less than or equal to 26 [(MPa)

] as determined by Fedors method. The catalyst may further comprise a metallic compound. By allowing (A) a compound capable of forming a radical to react with (B) a radical scavenging compound in the presence of the catalyst, an addition or substitution reaction product between the compound (A) and the compound (B) or a derivative thereof can be obtained.
