hydrogen atom transfer to the oxygen of the olefin cation radical, followed by deprotonation. Laser flashphotolysis experiments indicate that reaction between 5 and 1,4-cyclohexadiene occurs with a rate constant of approximately 6 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1). 2,2-Dimethoxy-1-phenylpropane (18) is observed as a minor product. Laser flashphotolysis experiments place an upper limit on methanol trapping of 5
impregnated on alumina as a reagent for promoting alkylation was optimized with respect to the metal cation, the amount of impregnation, and the reaction solvent. Potassium or caesium fluoride on alumina in acetonitrile or 1,2-dimethoxyethane was concluded to be the best reaction system for general use. O-Alkylation of substituted phenols, primary and secondary alcohols, and a glycol was carried out
Oxidation of alkyl phenyl selenides with m-chloroperbenzoic acid in methanol at room temperature affords the corresponding alkyl methyl ethers almost quantitatively, the reaction being accompanied by phenyl migration and ring-contraction respectively when applied to selenides having a phenyl group vicinal to the phenylselenium moiety and to some methoxyselenation products of cyclic olefins.
