C2H4−, with [Cl2Ru(CO)3]2 was found to form a family of mono- and bimetallic complexes including compounds of the form: Ru2(CO)4(η5,η5C5H4LC5H4), Ru(CO)2(η5,η5:1C5H4LC 5H4), [Ru(CO)2][(CO)2Cl](η5,η5:η1C5H4LC5H3), and [Ru(CO)2Cl]2(η5,η5C5H4LC5H4). Cp'(2)Ru(2)(CO)(4) complex. A dimer with bridging CO groups is significantly less basic than another dimer with only terminal CO groups although the donor abilities of their Cp' ligands are nearly equal. The Ru-Ru bond in Cp(2)Ru(2)(CO)(4) is substantially more basic than the Ru in the related mononuclear CpRu(CO)(2)H. The first [2.2]Cyclopentadienophane (= 2,2,3,3.8,8,9,9-octamethyltricyclo[8.2.1.1(4.7)]tetradecatetraene; 1b) has been synthesized (Scheme 5) by reductive coupling of 6,6-dimethylfulvens 3 --> 5 (50%) followed by base-induced twofold condensation of 1,2-di(cyclopentadienyl)-1,2-dimethylbutane 5 with acetone to give difulvene 15 (95%). Reductive coupling of 15 gives a complex mixture of tautomers of 16, 17, and 1b, which contains ca. 50% of thr target molecule 1b. Other synthetic attempts towards [2.2]cyclopentadienophanes 1a and 1b and [2.3]cyclopentadienophane 18 are discussed.

The synthesis of 1,2-bis(2-indenyl)ethane via a bis cycloalkylation-bis elimination sequence on 1,4-bis(phenylsulfonyl)butane is presented. The dilithio salt derived from the bis(indene) was treated with TiCl3.3THF to afford (ethylenebis(2-indenyl))titanium dichloride, the parent complex for ethylene-bridged bis(2-indenyl) systems.
