A Pd-catalyzed method for the preparation of imidazoliniumsalts from the corresponding thioureas that could then be used for the synthesis of imidazolium and amidinium salts is described. This method has great potential because all the required reagents are readily available and thioureas are safely converted to their corresponding precursors of NHCs under mild conditions.

The invention relates to a method for producing imidazolium salts by reacting bisimines or corresponding heterocycles with a combination consisting of an alkylating agent and of a metal salt serving as promoters of the reaction. This method makes it possible to obtain a multlitude of imidazolium salts under mild reaction conditions and in good yields. The imidazolium salts produced from heterocycles constitute novel compounds.
