The hydrolysis of aryl esters of 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid in moderately to strongly alkaline aqueous solution follows a dissociative pathway with the participation of a sulfoquinone (thioquinone dioxide) intermediate.
