A silver-catalyzed efficient and practical synthesis of 3-acyl-4-arylquinolin-2(1H)-ones or 3-acyl-4-aryldihydroquinolin-2(1H)-ones through intermolecular radical addition/cyclization in aqueous solution is reported.
