Optically active liquid crystalline compounds have the formula
in which ℓ and m are each 0 or 1; at least one of R¹ and R² is an optically active alkoxy group of the formula -OCH-R⁴ ( in which R³ is a C²-C₃ alkyl group and R⁴ is a C₃-C₁₈ alkyl group, provided that R³ is not the same as R⁴) and the other of R¹ and R² is a C₁-C₂₀ alkyl, C₁-C₂₀ alkoxy or C₁-C₂₀ alkanoyloxy group or a halogen atom or a cyano group; and A is a group:
(in X, Y and Z are each independently a hydrogen or halogen atom or a cyano group).

Optically active 2,5-diphenyl pyrimide compounds, for use in liquid crystal composition have the formula:
in which R¹ is a C₁-C₂₀ alkoxy group; R² is an alkyl, acyl or alkoxyacyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms;
and * indicates an asymmetric carbon atom.
A light modulating material having an excellent energy saving effect e.g. as a window material, which comprises as a main component member a laminate wherein a liquid crystalline material (4) is placed over at least one light transmitting substrate (1), said laminate having properties of a light transmittance of not less than 50% at a wavelength of 400-750nm at an overall temperature from not lower than 273K to not higher than 313K, a light transmittance of not less than 60% at a wavelength of 750-2000nm at an overall temperature from not lower than 273K to low than 288K and a light transmittance of not more than 40% and a light reflectance of not less than 50% at a wavelength of 750-2000nm at an overall temperature from not lower than 298K to not higher than 313K.

The present invention provides an anti-flaking agent comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of (A) a compound having a specific volume resistivity of 1.0 × 1010 Ω·cm or less, and (B) a compound in which a percentage of the number of carbon atoms having an aromatic ring structure is 40% or more among all carbon atoms constituting a molecule, each in an amount exceeding 0.1% by mass based on a total mass of the anti-flaking agent. The present invention also provides a lubricant composition containing the anti-flaking agent.
