  Acetals and thioacetals are intermediates in a process for the preparation of a trioxaspiroundecane derivative of the formula III outlined in the following diagram wherein R is -(CH2)3CH(CH3)CH2OSi(C6H5)2t-C4H9, -(CH2)3CH(CH3)CH2OCH2OCH2CH2OCH3 and -(CH2)3CH(CH3)=CH2. This compound is an intermediate in the synthesis of a compound of the formula one of the most active components of the zoapatle plant. The natural product is useful as an utero-evacuant agent.
