Key steps include an alkynyl ketone-benzocyclobutane Diels-Alder reaction to construct the C,D-ring naphthalene subunit, a Heck cyclization to form the quaternary carbon, and a ring closing metathesis to add the A-ring.

A catalyst‐controlled regiodivergent dehydrogenativeHeckreaction of 4‐arylthiophene/furan‐3‐carboxylates has been realized. Use of a palladium catalyst led to the C‐5 alkenylation through electronic palladation, while a ruthenium catalyst favored the C‐2 alkenylation with the assistance of a directing group. This reaction exhibited good to excellent regioselectivities.
A highly efficient palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling reaction of heteroaryl halides with electron-rich vinylether and hydroxyalkyl vinylethers is described.
