p,p'-Polymethylene-dibenzoic acids (I, n = 6, 8, 9,10) have been prepared by carbonation of the appropriate organo-lithium compounds.

The aluminium chloride catalysed Friedel-Crafts reaction between adipoyl chloride and bromobenzene has been re-examined. At elevated temperatures a number of side products are produced including a cyclopentane epoxide. The structure of this epoxide was elucidated by nmr and ir spectroscopy and its stereochemistry confirmed by x-ray crystallography.

Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) have optoelectronic properties that are unique when compared to their acyclic oligoparaphenylene counterparts. The synthesis and characterization of two bent heptaphenyl-containing macrocycles has been achieved in order to probe the effects of bending and cyclic conjugation on the properties of the CPPs. The study suggests that both bending and cyclic conjugation play a role in the novel properties of the CPPs.
