6-diketone derivatives were prepared by first copper (II) trifluoromethanesulfonate catalysed ring-opening of cyclopropyl ketones with 1,3-diketones followed by DBU-promoted retro-Claisen-type reactions. The acyclic 1,3-diketones selectively worked as carbon-nucleophiles to add to the donor–acceptor cyclopropanes.
