Stepwise alkylation of diethylcyclopentadiene as well as the reaction of 2,3,4,5-tetraethylcyclopent-2-enone with ethylmagnesiumbromide result in formation of pentaethylcyclopentadiene. Tri-, tetra- and pentaethylcyclopentadienides were synthesized by metalation with sodium amide or n-butyllithium and converted to ferrocenes [(η5-C5EtnH5−n)2Fe] and molybdenum complexes [(η5-C5EtnH5−n)Mo(CO)3CH3].
