Selective methylenation with Ph3PCH2 and methylation with MeMgI or MeLi of keto group of ketoaldehydes was accomplished by protection of aldehyde with t-butylamine. The intermediate aldimines were cleaved during chromatographic purifications on silica to afford the corresponding methylene aldehydes and methylhydroxy aldehydes as the only isolable reaction products.
