The 11-cis enriched photostationary state mixture of retinal trapped in BLG, a water soluble protein, is similar to that of retinal in heptanol. The results, along with those of the lower homologs, are consistent with a model involving specific protein interaction with the cyclohexenyl portion of the substrate and remote protonation of the aldehyde carbonyl group.
