A composition and method whereby the same group that is attached to or within the backbone of an associative thickener is reversibly switched between being hydrophilic and hydrophobic in nature. The group comprises a tertiary amine, or tertiary phosphine and has a hydrocarbon radical bonded to the amine nitrogen atom or phosphine phosphorus atom, which hydrocarbon radical is pendant to the backbone and contains fewer than 10 carbon atoms. When the group that is attached to or within the backbone is rendered hydrophilic, the aqueous thickener is pourable and readily incorporated into aqueous polymer compositions. When this group is rendered hydrophobic, the thickener performs its thickening function efficiently. Switching is readily accomplished by adjusting the pH of the associative thickener composition and the aqueous polymer composition being thickened.
The present invention is a process for preparing an aqueous solution of a hydrophobically modified alkylene oxide poly(urethane-urea-allophanate) thickener by contacting isocyanate reactive groups with a stoichiometric excess of a diisocyanate, followed by reaction with water. The thickener surprisingly shows a maintenance or improvement in hiding in paint formulations while maintaining other critical rheological properties.
A water soluble or water dispersible associative thickener having a) a hydrophobic portion with a calculated log P (CLogP) in the range of from 2.9 to 8.2; and b) a weight average molecular weight (Mw) from 48,000 to 150,000; wherein the associative thickener comprises a polyether, a polyalkylene oxide, a polymethacrylamide, a polysaccharide, or a polyvinyl alcohol backbone.

The present invention relates to: a method of producing a structure having a recessed pattern; a resin composition; a method of forming an electroconductive film; an electronic circuit; and an electronic device. The method of producing a structure having a recessed pattern includes the following steps (i) and (ii), and the recessed pattern has a film thickness that is thinner by 5% to less than 90% with respect to that of a coating film obtained in the step (i):
(i) the step of forming a coating film on a non-flat surface of a structure using a resin composition which includes an acid-dissociable group-containing polymer and an acid generator; and
(ii) the step of forming a recess by subjecting a prescribed part of a portion of the coating film to irradiation with radiation.
