Cleavage of cyclopropyl derivative 1 by means of Hg2+ occurs with a skeletal rearrangement to afford a stable organomercurial 3 which on treatment with Me2CuLi gives cyclobutanol 9; analogous conjugate addition is also reported (10 --> 15).
