The present invention relates to a cationic lipid having one or more biodegradable groups located in a lipidic moiety (e.g., a hydrophobic chain) of the cationic lipid. These cationic lipids may be incorporated into a lipid particle for delivering an active agent, such as a nucleic acid. The invention also relates to lipid particles comprising a neutral lipid, a lipid capable of reducing aggregation, a cationic lipid of the present invention, and optionally, a sterol. The lipid particle may further include a therapeutic agent such as a nucleic acid.

Alkyl methyl ethers and alkyl methyl carbonates were synthesized by reaction of alcohols with dimethyl carbonate in the presence of tungsten and cobalt carbonyls. Optimal reactant and catalyst ratios, as well as reaction conditions, were found for selective formation of alkyl methyl ethers or alkyl methyl carbonates.

expected oxidation product 2 in moderate to good yield. In the presence of ozone, but without water, the similar oxidation was observed only after prolonged reaction time, suggesting that some initial minor reaction with a strong oxidant, possible nitrogen trioxide, afforded an acidic promoter, which then worked as a catalyst similar to that involved in the reaction with a nitrogendioxide and water
