  The Diels–Alder reaction between methyl α-cyanocinnamate and cyclopentadiene, as a key step in the synthesis of 2-amino-3-phenylnorbornane-2-carboxylic acids, is studied. The cycloadducts can be easily separated and converted into the amino acids through simple reactions.
