The synthesis of the polyquinane, tetracyclo[7.2.1.04,11.06,10]dodeca-2,5,7,12-tetrol 10, via the Weiss reaction, as well as its conversion to diene 14 is described. To assess the relative energies of postulated intermediates 11 and 12 as well as the target, pentaene 3, MNDO calculations have been performed the results of which are reported.
