    This invention comprises a process for hydrogenation of aldehydes to alcohols using novel homogeneous catalysts. The catalysts are generated in situ under hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases in a suitable solvent, by mixing a rhodium catalyst precursor, such as Rh(CO) 2 acetoacetonate and a defined ligand.

    Bidentate ligand of formula II, R 1 R 2 M 1 —R—M 2 R 3 R 4 (II) wherein M 1 and M 2 are independently P, As or Sb; R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 independently represent tertiary alkyl groups, or R 1 and R 2 together and/or R 3 and R 4 together represent an optionally substituted bivalent cycloaliphatic group whereby the two free valencies are linked to M 1 or M 2 , and R represents a bivalent aliphatic bridging group containing from 2 to 6 atoms in the bridge, which is substituted with two or more substituents. A catalyst system comprising: a) a source of group VIII metal cations; b) a source of such a bidentate ligand; and c) a source of anions, and use of such a catalyst system in a process for the carbonylation of optionally substituted ethylenically or acetylenically unsaturated compounds by reaction with carbon monoxide and a coreactant is provided.

    Polymers of carbon monoxide with one or more C3⁺alpha-olefins and optionally with ethene, which have a linear and alternating CO-olefin structure, and show regioregularity in that more than 50% of the C3⁺alpha-olefin originating units are attached in head-tail fashion to the CO-originating units carrying such olefin units on either side. They may be prepared by using a palladium catalyst system based on an aliphatic diphosphine as bidentate ligand therein.

    Copolymers of carbon monoxide with one or more mono-olefins having at least three carbon atoms in the molecule are prepared by copolymerization of the monomers in the presence of a catalyst composition based upon a) a palladium compound, b) an anion of an acid having a pKa < 2, and c) a bisphosphine of formula (R²)₂P-R-P(R²)₂, where R is a bivalent bridging group having at least two C-atoms in the bridge, and R² is an optionally polar-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, and in the additional presence of a compound of formula C(X)(Y)(OR³)₂ wherein X = H or hydrocarbyl, Y = H, hydrocarbyl or OR³, and R³ = hydrocarbyl.
