Versatile Synthesis of PR2NR′2 Ligands for Molecular Electrocatalysts with Pendant Bases in the Second Coordination Sphere

Two 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane (P2N2) ligands with alkyl-substituted phosphines have been synthesized via a versatile method that allows for improved control of the phosphine substituent. The methyl- and benzyl-substituted phosphine P2N2 ligands ((P2N2Ph)-N-Me and (P2N2Ph)-N-Bn) were synthesized and characterized by P-31{H-1} NMR, H-1 NMR, and elemental analysis, and their corresponding [Ni((P2N2Ph)-N-R)(2)](BF4)(2) complexes were synthesized and characterized by P-31{H-1) NMR, H-1 NMR, and electrochemistry. The structure of the complex [Ni((P2N2Ph)-N-Me)(2)](CF3SO3)(2) was characterized by X-ray crystallography.

The reaction of bis(hydroxymethyl)phenylphosphine with distyrylsulfone proceeds stereoselectively to give only one of two possible stereoisomers of 3,4,5-triphenyl-1,4-thiaphosphorinane 1,1-dioxide. The preparation and stereochemistry of some other 1,4-thiaphosphorinane 1,1-dioxides are also described.
