This disclosure relates to compounds for the inhibition of histone deacetylase and treatment of a cognitive disorder or deficit. More particularly, the disclosure provides for compounds of formula (I)

The present invention provides substituted dibenzoxazepine compounds of Formula I: ##STR1## which are useful as analgesic agents for the treatment of pain, pharmaceutical compositions comprising a therapeutically-effective amount of a compound of Formula I in combination with a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier, and a method for eliminating or ameliorating pain in an animal comprising administering a therapeutically-effective amount of a compound of Formula I to the animal.
A new approach to the synthesis of 10‐ and 11‐membered lactams via hydrated imidazoline ringexpansion is described. In addition to the ringexpansion an alternative course of the hydrated imidazoline evolution was discovered, for the first time, which gave N‐aminoethyl derivatives.

A practical protocol for the synthesis of dibenzo[b,e][1,4]oxazepin-11(5H)-ones has been developed. By virtue of Pd-catalyzed aminocarbonylation and aromatic nucleophilic substitution, 61 examples of the desired dibenzoxazepinones were obtained in moderate to excellent isolated yields (54-92%).
