  A simple and effective procedure for conversion of primary, secondary, allylic and benzylic alcohols into the corresponding iodides is described using NaI/Amberlyst 15 in acetonitrile at room temperature. Selective conversion of benzylic alcohols in the presence of saturated alcohols into the corresponding benzylic iodides is achieved under these conditions.

  Allylic alcohols were readily converted into allylic iodides by hydrogen iodide generated in situ from chlorotrimethylsilane/sodium iodide and water, or alcohols, under mild conditions. Displacement of allylic alcohols containing a terminal double bond gave allylic iodides accompanied by allylic rearrangement. This procedure has successfully been extended to a one-pot synthesis of homoallylic alcohols by carrying out successive Barbier type reactions.

Selective conversion of allylic and benzylic alcohols in the presence of primary and secondary saturated alcohols has also been demonstrated.
