Synthesis and crystal structure of a new c2-symmetric chiral bis-sulfoxide ligand and its palladium(ii) complex

A new chiral bis-sulfoxide ligand (S,S)-1,2-bis(p-tolylsulfinyl)benzene (BTSB), which prossesses S.S-bidentate chelating donor atoms on an aromatic ring, was synthesized. Pd, Rh, and Ru readily gave adducts with this ligand. The crystal structure of PdCl2[btsb-S,S']. 2(C6H6) showed that this ligand had C-2-symmetric S-coordination. Moderate asymmetric induction was observed in the Pd-catalyzed allylic substitution using BTSB as a ligand.

8-Hydroxyquinolin- N -oxide was identified as a superior ligand for CuI-catalyzed C–S coupling reactions of aryliodides with thiols to afford the corresponding thioethers in excellent yield. The method shows excellent chemoselectivity and high functional-group tolerance in both coupling partners.

A direct and practical approach for the construction of DBTs was developed via a Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction, in which commercially available o-bromo-iodobenzenes combined with benzene thiols or iodobenzenes combined with o-bromo-benzene thiols were applied. These two approaches will provide an alternative for the synthesis of DBT derivatives.
