A novel methodology for the formation of blockcopolymers has been developed that combines ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with functional chain-transfer agents (CTAs) and self-assembly. Telechelic homopolymers of cyclooctene derivatives end-functionalized with hydrogen-bonding or metal-coordination sites are formed through the combination of ROMP with a corresponding functional CTA.

A new polynorbornene bearing palladated SCS pincer complexes at each repeat unit has been synthesized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Small mesogenic molecules possessing nitrile or pyridine-based anchoring units are instantaneously and quantitatively coordinated to the palladium center in one simple self-assembly step giving rise to a densely functionalized polymer. These results suggest that the coordination of mesogenic small molecules onto the polymer scaffold can provide a simple and efficient route to a variety of materials.

Palladium(II)–SCS-pincer complexes have been covalently immobilized on porous silica and polynorbornene supports and evaluated in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction of iodobenzene and n-butyl acrylate. Kinetic experiments and poisoning studies indicate that the pincercomplexes decompose under reaction conditions via rupture of the palladiumligand bonds to liberate active Pd(0) homogeneous species.
