Abstract Zinc powder activated by heating in an inert atmosphere gave good yields when used for the title reactions. The very easy work up procedure for the cyclobutanones further increases the potential of the method.

A new finding that the methylene group adjacent to a cyclopropane ring can be oxidized to the keto group directly with ruthenium tetroxide is described.

Evidence for a radical intermediate in the lithium aluminium hydride reduction of halocyclopropanes is obtained from the comparison of the stereochemical outcome of this reaction with tributyltin hydride, dimsylsodium and sodium methoxy ethoxy aluminium hydride.
