Chlorocyclization of tryptamine derivatives has been developed with the use of a diphenyl diselenide–iodine cooperative catalyst. Various tryptamine derivatives can be smoothly converted to the corresponding C3a-chlorohexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indoles.
