A broad study of the (salen)Mn(III)-catalyzedasymmetric epoxidation of cis-cinnamate esters reveals that the steric properties of the ester group have a profound influence on enantioselectivity in the epoxidation reaction, with bulkier esters affording highest ee's. The sensitivity of the reaction selectivity to the steric properties of the cis-alkene are consistent with a “skewed” side-on approach
The electronic nature of the aryl bromides and the olefins has a dominating effect on the reaction yield and selectivity. The heterogeneous catalysts quantitatively convert all types of all aryl bromide (complete conversion of bromobenzene within 30 min) and activated arylchlorides under standard reaction conditions. Product form selectivity is observed in the Heck reaction with cyclic olefins.

We report a stereoinvertive deoxygenation of trans-3-arylglycidates as an alternative route to access thermodynamically less stable (Z)-cinnamate esters by using nickel triflate and triphenylphosphine.
