A compound of formula (I) where R represents unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, or aryl, and X represents formula (II) or formula (III), where R1 and R2 are each H or alkyl, is disclosed. Compounds of formula (I) are particularly useful as an attractant for cockroaches, namely, Blattella germanica. Synthesis of the compounds, methods of controlling cockroach populations, and of disrupting cockroach mating are also disclosed.

The total synthesis of (-)-periplanone-B 1, the major sex excitant and attractant pheromone of the Americancockroach was accomplished starting from (+)-dihydrolimonene 2. Intramolecular alkylation of the substituted α-phenylthioacrylate 10 gave rise to the ()-cyclodecene 11. The naturally occurring (-)-enantiomer of periplanone-B was synthesized stereoselectively starting from (S)-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxylic acid. The crystalline pheromone was obtained in 12% overall yield through 18 steps.
