Improved process for the preparation of partially alcoholyzed polyvinyl acetate having good compositional uniformity comprises rapid premixing of the polyvinyl acetate polymer and base catalyst solutions in a static mixer and carrying out the alcoholysis reaction in an intermeshing, self-wiping, twin-rotor mixer or mixing extruder. The process yields polyvinyl alcohol product having a maximum hot water insoluble fraction of about 1.1% by weight obtained by the proper adjustment of the feed temperature, the shear rate in the premixer, and the catalyst concentration in the catalyst feed solution.

The present invention is a homogeneous gum base composition which includes a properly plasticized elastomer component and a properly plasticized resin component, and optionally, a third component having fillers, emulsifiers, and/or softening agents, texturizing agents and waxes normally associated with production of chewing gum base. This invention also includes a method of preparing the novel chewing gum base as well as their use in a chewing gum.
A chewing gum composition having a low viscosity range and high cohesivity which is suitable for dispensing from a container, such as a squeezable tube, under mild pressure which includes high molecular weight resin-containing gum base in an amount of 15-25%, a cohesive sweetening-bulking component in an amount of from about 15% to about 82%, crystallization inhibitor in an amount of from about 1-15%, and a fine-tuning fluidization component in an amount of from about 0.5%-15% by weight.

The present invention is a chewing gum base composition and a method for making same which includes an elastomer and a resin prepared in the absence of rosin esters and terpene components which includes an elastomer component raised to a compatibilization temperature for addition of a compatibilization component. The composition includes a high melting point compatibilization component added under low shear mixing conditions at a temperature sufficient to masticate the elastomer for forming a substantially homogeneous mass with the resin component. The compatibilization component is capable of effectuating dissociation of the elastomer under the conditions of temperature and mixing for forming the substantially homogeneous mass. Finally, a resin component is added also under low shear mixing conditions and mildly elevated temperatures until a substantially homogenous gum base mass is formed.

A sugarless, anhydrous chewing gum composition, and products made therefrom which has a firm textural integrity and a soft ghew characteristic and very low-moisture content and low-moisture pick-up over time. The composition includes gum base in an amount of from 18% to about 75% by weight, and a low-moisture pick-up, texturizing sweetening/bulking agent in an amount sufficient to provide textural integrity and a soft chew characteristic over a period of time.
