The present invention relates to the isolation, purification, sequencing, and functional characterization of the class I and II terpene sequences OsCPS1ent, OsCPS2ent, OsCPS4syn, and OsDTS2. Transcriptional control of OsCPS1ent provides a means of regulating production of gibberellin phytohormone, while transcriptional control of OsCPS2ent, OsDTS2, and OsCPS4syn provides a means of regulating defensive phytochemical biosynthesis. Further, these enzymatic genes offers a means by which terpenoid production may be more generally modulated, specifically including genetic engineering, as well as ex vivo uses.
