Perfluorocarbon liquids are disclosed as being useful as substitutes for the vitreous or aqueous of the eye, and as transparentizing agents in the cornea or lens of the eye. Radiopaque liquid perfluorocarbons are useful as radiopaque agents in diagnostic procedures on the eye.
Gas transport agents containing a perfluorocyclocarbon and an amine oxide are disclosed. These compositions provide emulsions or solutions for use in oxygen transport, particularly in animals. They are therefore useful as artificial blood compositions. Large concentrations of perfluorocarbons may be employed even up to 50% or more by volume in preparing emulsions, microemulsions or solutions. The emulsions or solutions are stable under room temperature storage conditions
Extraocular ophthalmic preparations or devices useful as therapeutic, diagnostic lubricating or protective agents are disclosed. Perfluorocarbon films or gels are employed extraocularly as contact lenses. Liquid perfluorocarbons and substituted derivatives are the active components of the ophthalmic preparations. The neat perfluorocarbon liquids are not aqueous, wherefore, isotonicity and pH need not be considered in their preparation. Liquid sterility may be maintained without the addition of preservatives. Cornea and conjunctiva surfaces are provided with greater amounts of oxygen when the perfluorcarbon liquids are employed as eye drops. Transparent contact lenses having oxygen permeable properties are provided by the extraocular perfluorocarbon films or discs. Emulsions of perfluorocarbons in water are also suitable for all of the above uses and as carriers for drugs, antibiotics, hormones and therapeutic agents.

A method to detect indirectly at least one gas, particularly dissolved gases, of an animal employing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (NMR). The method examines an NMR spectrum to determine chemical shift relaxation times or spin-spin couplings for an element of an animal influenced by at least one gas of the animal, the chemical shift corresponding to the amount or identify of the gas.
A method to detect indirectly a temperature of an object employing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (NMR). The method involves obtaining an NMR spectrum to determine chemical shift, relaxation times, spin-spin couplings or quadrupole couplings for an element of a compound having at least one conformational isomer wherein the compound is influenced by a temperature of the object.
The difference between the detected radio frequency signals for the same element, spectral patterns or chemical shifts corresponds to the temperature of the object.
