    Chiral catalysts for enantioselectively epoxidizing a prochiral olefin and for enantioselectively oxidizing a prochiral sulfide are disclosed, together with methods of using such catalysts. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the catalyst is a salen derivative which has the following general structure: ##STR1## In accordance with another aspect of the present invention is a method of, producing an epoxychroman using a chiral catalyst. In accordance with this method, a chromene derivative, an oxygen atom source, and a chiral catalyst are reacted under such conditions and for such time as is needed to epoxidize said chromene derivative. In accordance with yet another aspect of this invention is a method of enantioselectively epoxidizing a cis-cinnamate derivative to make taxol or an analog thereof. In accordance with another aspect a method of disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide using the catalysts of the present invention is disclosed.

    A method for producing an optically active lactone compound by Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of a cyclic ketone compound with at least one kind of oxidants selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide and urine-hydrogen peroxide adduct (UHP) using a cobalt(salen) complex having a cis-&bgr; structure expressed by the following formula (I) or (II) as a catalyst. 1 in which X and Y independently denote H, a t-butyl group or an electron-withdrawing substituting group and W is a halogen element. 2 in which X and Y independently denote H, a t-butyl group or an electron-withdrawing substituting group and Z − is a monovalent anion. The optically active lactone compounds can be used for the synthesis of medicines and argochemicals.

    Disclosed are novel rigidified compounds having a rhodanine-like residue and at least one aryl or heteroaryl residue linked to the rhodanine-like residue, whereby a core structure of these compounds, as defined in the specification, is characterized as having one or zero free-to-rotate bonds. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions containing these rigidified compounds and uses thereof for modulating the activity of heparanase and hence in the treatment of heparanase-associated diseases and disorders, and uses thereof for modulating the activity of heparin-binding proteins and hence in the treatment of heparin-binding proteins-associated diseases and disorders as well as in the treatment of medical conditions that are at least partially treatable by rhodanine or a rhodanine analog.

    A method for monitoring the stereoselectivity of at least one organic chemical reaction and the relative rate of at least one organic chemical reaction, wherein the reaction produces a product that can exist as at least two stereoisomers, the process comprising: providing a first reaction zone containing (1) an organic phase comprising the reaction mixture for producing the product and (2) an aqueous phase adjacent to, but substantially immiscible with the organic phase, the aqueous phase containing at least one first sensing agent that preferentially acts on a first stereoisomer in the product to produce a monitorable change, the product being diffusible into the aqueous layer (2). providing a second reaction zone containing (A) an organic phase also comprising the reaction mixture for producing the product and (B) an aqueous phase adjacent to, but substantially immiscible with the organic phase, the aqueous phase containing at least one sensing agent that is different from the first sensing agent and that [i] also preferentially acts on the first stereoisomer in the product, but with a different stereoselectivity for the stereoisomers formed in the product than the first sensing agent to produce a monitorable change or [ii] acts at equal rates on both formed stereoisomers of the product to produce a monitorable change or [iii] preferentially acts on a second stereoisomer in the product to produce a monitorable change, the product being diffusible into the aqueous layer (B), conducting the reactions in the organic phases (1) and (A) to produce the products, allowing the products to diffuse into the aqueous phases (2) and (B) and react with the first and second sensing agents, monitoring the changes caused by the reactions with the first and second sensing agents and determining from the changes the relative rate and stereoselectivity of the organic chemical reaction in the organic phases (1) and (2). Also disclosed are methods for identifying and preparing catalysts for the above reactions.
