  A new, fluorous-tagged chiral auxiliary has been developed for the asymmetric, SmI2-mediated coupling of aldehydes and alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. gamma-Butyrolactones are obtained in moderate to good isolated yield and in high enantiomeric excess.
