The acid treatment of 6,7-seco-abietane dialdehydes gives, in high yield, the corresponding derivatives with the 4a-methyltetrahydrofluorene skeleton of taiwaniaquinoids. A mechanism involving the elimination of formic acidfrom the cyclic aldol intermediate is proposed here.
