Naturally occurring cyclo-polypeptides may be subdivided into two groups, according t o whether the rings contain only peptide linkages or not. The adjectives homodetic and heterodetic are proposed to differentiate these two types of cyclo-polypeptides.

Cavities formed using cyclic tetrapeptides (CTPs) or heat-induced conformers act as templates for cyclization; the cavities bind to linear tetrapeptides and enforce turn conformations to enhance cyclization to constrained CTPs.
