A three-step sequence of reactions involving the lithium salt of diethyl difluoromethylphosphonate as a difluoromethyl carrier is shown to efficiently convert aliphatic and arylic aldehydes 2 into difluoromethyl ketones 1via an unusual carbon-phosphorus bond scission.
