18-crown-5 p-nitrophenol (1) with 1,2-diaminoethane produces a 1:2 cage-like complex (2) in which proton transfer has occurred to both amino groups. The crystal structure of (2) has been determined. Crystals of (2)·2EtOH are monoclinic, space group P21/n with two formula units in a cell of dimensions a= 11.903(2), b= 14.361(3), c= 13.014(2)Å, β= 95.98(2)°.
