    Natural products are important materials that have found a wide variety of uses, especially in medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has especially taken advantage of natural products and compounds found in Leonurus, a species of herb used extensively in TCM to treat various ailments. Herein we describe the synthesis of three natural products from Leonurus japonicus and our investigation of their hepatoprotective properties.

    The collective total syntheses of nine natural phenylethanoid glycosides (PhEGs) together with proposed Incanoside B in a divergent mode were described. By using a core disaccharide as common intermediate, our developed interrupted Pummerer reaction mediated (IPRm) glycosylations adopting latent-active strategy enables the efficient, concise and divergent syntheses of these bioactive PhEGs. Among them, five natural PhEGs, Darendoside B (1), Cistanoside G (3), Decaffeoyl acteoside (4), Kankanoside F (5) and 4 '''-epi-Leonoside F (7) were the first time being synthesized. According to the synthesis of 4 '''-epi-Leonoside F (7), we also elucidated the real structure of carbohydrate component of the PhEG isolated from Rehmannia glutinosa which was misled as "Leonoside F".[GRAPHICS].

    Two new phenylpropanoid glycosides, named cistanosides E (III) and F (IV), were isolated from Cistanchis Herba, the whole plant of Cistanche salsa (C. A. MEY.) G. BECK (Orobanchaceae), together with two known lignan glycosides, liriodendrin (I) and (+)-syringaresinol O-β-D-glucopyranoside (II). The structures of III and IV were determined to be 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) ethyl O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→3)-O-(4-O-caffeoyl)-D-glucopyranose, respectively, on the basis of chemical and spectral data.
