  alpha-Chloropolyfluoroalkyl ethers were synthesized by the reaction of polyfluorinated alcohols H(CF(2)CF(2)) (n) CH(2)OH (n=1-3) with aliphatic aldehydes (ethanal, propanal, butanal) and hydrogen chloride. Yield of alpha-chloroethers decreases from 71 to 61% as the number of carbon atoms in the starting reactants increases. alpha-Chloropolyfluoroalkyl ethers react with polyfluorinated alcohols (n = 1-3) to form acetals in yield of up to 40-61%, and with methanol and ethanol, up to 98%.

  A fluorine-containing ether of the formula: wherein X is a chlorine atom or a bromine atom, and Rf1 and Rf2 are the same or different and a hydrogen atom, a fluo­rine atom or a fluorine-containing C₁-C₂₀ aliphatic or ether group, m is an integer of 0 to 9 provided that at least one of Rf1 and Rf2 is not a hydrogen atom, and when m is zero (0), neither of Rf1 and Rf2 is a fluorine atom is prepared by reacting at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a fluorine-containing alcohol of the formula: or a fluorine-containing acetal of the formula: wherein Rf1, Rf2 and m are the same as defined above with acetaldehyde and at least one hydrogen halide selected from the group consisting of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide.
