A variety of alcohols are converted into the corresponding acetates upon treatment with acetic anhydride and catalytic amount of chlorotrimethylsilane in acetonitrile (or dichloromethane).

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical macrocyclicpolyethers containing the 1,3-xylyl sub-unit and intra-annular functionalgroups have been synthesied from 2,6-bis(bromomethyl)anisole and dibutylstannylene derivatives of ethylene glycol, a chiral glycol derived from (+)-tatraric acid, and trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diol.
