A general and efficient method for the synthesis of oxazolidin‐2‐ones and imidazolidin‐2‐ones directly from 1,3‐diols and 3‐amino alcohols has been developed using the same reagent combination of iodobenzenedichloride (PhICl2) and sodium azide (NaN3).

Alkyldimesitylboranes, yield anions1, Mes2BCHR, that on reaction with oxiranes followed by oxidation give 1,3-diols. These anions are thus the operational equivalent of RCHOH. The scope and limitations of the new process are delineated.

The unstrained 3-chloroalcohols 1a, 2a and 3a do not undergo solvolytic fragmentation in neutral and weakly acidic 80% ethanol, only substitution and elimination products being formed by the limiting SN1-E1 mechanisms.
