A highly efficient method for the synthesis of 2,4-dihalo-1,3,5-trienes fromalkynols was developed. This chemistry allows access to multiple conjugated double bonds in a single step with high stereoselectivity.

Sealedballmilling provides a novel way of activation of calciumcarbide. No additive is required to transfer the acetylide moiety to organic molecules. Various ketones and even aryl halides can thereby be ethynylated.

Tertiary α-hydroxyalkynes undergo oxidative carbonylation in alcohols in the presence of catalytic amounts of Pdl2âKl to give β-lactones derived from alkoxycarbonylation at the terminal cabon of the alkyne and cis-carbonylation at the internal carbon, followed by carbonyl trapping by the tertiary hydroxy group.
