  [EN] A method for synthesizing 4-hydroxyisoleucine, stereoisomers and analogs thereof having a general formula I is disclosed herein. The method comprises reacting an alkyl isocyanoacetate of formula III with an acetoin or an acetoin analog of formula II to give an unsaturated N-formyl lactone of formula IV, hydrogenating the unsaturated N-formyl lactone to give N-formyl lactone of formula V and hydrolysing said lactone to yield the desired product of formula I.
