hectorite and FeOx-pillared taeniolite) were synthesized by the intercalation of FeCl3 into clay interlayers and calcination. The synthesized catalysts were exploited for conversion of epoxides furnishing acetonides in good to quantitative yields with short time under mild conditions. The catalysts could be recovered and reused up to five times without appreciable loss of activity.

Abstract A friendly method for the protection of diols and carbonyls catalysed by hexahydrated iron (III) chloride has been developed. This method, which consists of the transformation of diols and carbonyls to cyclic acetals, functions in mild conditions and it is efficient for a wide range of diols.
Anodic Deprotection of ketone acetals under very mild conditions of 1-phenylethane-1,2-diol as a protecting reagent and N-hydroxypthalimide as a mediator.
