  9-Trifluoromethyl-paullones with a carbon chain in the 2-position were synthesized by palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions of a 2-iodoprecursor with terminal alkenes or alkynes, respectively.   Intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonding has been used to induce dipyridyl anthranilamide 5 and diphenylacetylene anthranilamide 11 to adopt rigid straight conformation. Compound 5 reacted with Pd(dppp)(OTf)(2) (12a) or Pt(dppp)(OTf)(2) (12b) in dichloromethane to afford square metallocyclophanes 13a and 13b in 70% and 40% yield, respectively. The choice of potassium acetate as the base was found to be crucial to inhibit the amination reaction and to promote the direct arylation.

  The example of rare-earth metal-catalyzed guanylation/cyclization of amino acid esters and carbodiimides is well-established, forming 4(3H)-2-alkylaminoquinazolinones in 65–96% yields.
